    Outlines are extremely helpful when it comes to white papers. Without them, you spend twice as much time organizing your writing. I remember trying to write my first one from scratch. It wasn’t until about half way through that I realized I already had most of my data on hand from doing previous work for that client. You’re absolutely right when you say they don’t have to be so time consuming. By taking the time to get organized first, the project goes far faster than you’d think.

    Embracing the ugly first draft is crucial. I never get tired of quoting Ernest Hemingway, who said, “The first draft of everything is s__t.” It’s only after you get the raw material down that you can build the momentum towards making a great piece. It’s a very satisfying feeling to see the lump of coal that is your first draft transform into the diamond that is (hopefully) your final product.
