How to Use eBooks for Fantastic Small Business Marketing

If you’ve spent time online, you’ve likely seen it at one time or another – websites that offer a free eBook in exchange for nothing more than your email address.

If you have ever looked into using eBooks for small business marketing, then you have most likely heard that eBooks are a great form of content for business marketing.

However, if you’re new to the content marketing scene, then it may be somewhat confusing…

The Benefits of Using eBooks for Small Business Marketing

For anyone who is looking to build their business online, eBooks offer a wide array of tangible benefits.

  • Lead Generation – This is the one you are probably most familiar with, offering a free eBook in exchange for an email address. This allows you to build your email list and potentially generate new leads.
  • Thought-Leadership – Obviously, one of the hardest tasks to accomplish is establishing yourself as a leader in your industry. By publishing and sharing an eBook, you can position yourself as an authority in your niche.
  • Share Your Business With Customers – One of the biggest problems with growing your business may simply be that your potential customers do not understand what you’re offering. With an eBook that thoroughly explains your products or services, and their benefits, you can help your clientele understand what you offer.
  • Build Your Brand – Whether you are selling products, services, your business or yourself, building your personal brand is an essential part of positioning yourself as someone that consumers can trust and look to.
  • Offer Expertise – Whatever your area of specialty may be, an eBook can help you share your valuable expertise with your target audience, which further builds trust and establishes you as an authority in your niche.

Using PDF eBooks for List Building & Lead Generation

The simplest type of eBook comes in a PDF format, and can be created using your average Microsoft Word or other writing program. These are great for small business marketing because other than the writing part, they can be put together relatively easily.

Simply use whatever email program that you prefer (AWeber, MailChimp, etc.) to create a popup or sign up form to capture emails and have it redirect to a hidden page or post on your website with a link to download the eBook.

This allows you to easily build and grow your emailing list and generate leads without having to sit and send out each copy of your eBook individually.

For those who are already on your email list, simply send out a special newsletter advertising the free eBook download.

Publishing on Amazon Kindle for Authority & Profit

For the more experienced business marketers, you may want to consider publishing on Amazon Kindle for eReaders. This option offers the chance to establish your authority, share valuable information and still make a profit.

That is not to mention, Amazon also offers a free preview of the first few pages. This allows you to insert links to your site that users can follow even if they cannot afford to purchase the eBook.

Although there is a bit more work involved in publishing via Amazon, it offers plenty of benefits that make it worth the while.

The most important ingredient for this type of eBook publishing would be creating plenty of hype before actually releasing the eBook.

Regardless of what type of eBook you choose to publish and promote, there are numerous benefits that can be had by the savvy startup or small business.

The best choice is simply to decide which method is best for your business and hire an ebook writer today.

Publishing on Amazon is actually really easy. As long as you have it formatted the way they require, they’ll pretty much publish it. I have put a couple of things up on Amazon, and it’s been fun to see how many copies sell.

You have ebooks available on Amazon? How cool. What kinds of books?

Georgia Potts

Yes, I’ve published two there just to see how they’d do. Both are non-fiction books. One of them was an ebook I had previously sold on my own site, and it’s done much better on Amazon. The other was one that I wrote just for Amazon publication. It has sold slowly but regularly. I haven’t really marketed it, so it’s relied on the good reviews that it’s gotten from readers and the low price on it. Overall, I’ve found the process to be easy and pretty fun.

That’s cool. It has to be fun to see them sell and to read the reviews that the readers leave for them. Good luck to you!

Would you mind sharing how many you’ve sold? I’ve always been curious how many books a writer could sell on Amazon without much marketing effort. I’m a writer, not a marketer, after all.

One of them hasn’t sold that many, probably less than 20 copies overall. The other one has sold a steady one to two copies a week for the past four years. It isn’t much as far as the monthly payment, but it has added up nicely over the years that it’s been for sale. I don’t like marketing my own stuff either, so I haven’t marketed either. The only thing I’ve really done is to use the free days they give you. If you publish an ebook exclusively with them, you can offer it for free for a few days.… Read more »

Thanks for that insight — and great job!

Would you write one again, having done it twice? Or, would you pursue a different project?

Yes, I’ll do it again. I want to try some fiction works on there to see how they do. So far it’s only been non-fiction, and I’ve heard that fiction can sell well there if you find the right niche.

Have you written fiction before? If so, what type?

Yes, I’ve had a few short stories published. They have been mostly science fiction and fantasy.

Thanks! I’m still shopping several stories out there. It can be a tough road to get stories submitted to the right places, but the rush when something is accepted is a feeling that can’t be beat.

You obviously have a great imagination if you write in those genres.

Thanks! It takes a lot to come up with something new in the genre. That’s what publishers are looking for, and you have to deliver it.

Obviously you can deliver it, so good for you.

It’s great that your book has “legs,” as they say in the movie industry. How satisfying it must be to see its sales continue to endure. That’s a lot better than making a big splash and then disappearing.

What was the process of publishing on Amazon like? Was it easier the second time?

I agree. I have a short ebook on Amazon to promote my photography, and a self published novel. It’s fun when you see the numbers rise, as you know that someone out there is reading your creations.

congrats on the sales of your ebooks. This is really interested and something I would love to do somewhere down the track. Its comforting to know that as long as the formatting is suitable it is possible to get your writing to readers that may take something away from what you have written.

This was an interesting read. As a writer of all kinds of materials, I think it would be fun to create some kind of an ebook one day.

What kind of eBook would you like to write?

tomysole

I’ve always wanted to write an eBook but find myself second guessing if I really have enough information to offer to actually make it a worthwhile product. I like the idea of generating leads with an ebook. I would just have to figure out how to configure a form on my website to receive the emails in exchange for the ebook. Those tech things are sometime confusing to me, but there’s probably a widget that does it on most blogging platforms.

Have you seen what’s in (or what’s not in) some ebooks? Yes, you have enough information! Go and do it!

You should go for it! It would be fun to see how something like that could work out. I’m sure you can find answers to your tech questions online somewhere.

I’ve decided to write an eBook now! But I’m trying to figure out how long the book should be. I was researching ways to drive extra targeted traffic to one of my niche blogs, and a free eBook was one of the things on my list. Now I just need to get started.

Thanks for the information, it is appreciated. I have published on Amazon before and the process is very straightforward. They also provide additional marketing tools. eBooks are great marketing tools and it is worth the effort and time.

Great tips! I have written one e-book so far which I have for sale — but I want to publish a much smaller booklet which I can give me email subscribers for free — as a way to bring in more readers and offer them something extra as well.

I’d only thought of using eBooks for reading in the same way I’d use old-fashioned books. I’m glad I found this post because now I feel like I’ve found a goldmine for marketing.

I love, love, LOVE using small ebooks as marketing materials to generate leads. I’ve done this with my photography business, and I get a number of leads from my ten page ebook for sale on Amazon. It was easy to write, and has been a proven way to market.

really like the Amazon tip and the fact that it gives you the ability to provide a link to your site and offering consumers a few pages of the ebook you have to offer. This gives you a great chance to stand out and draw the customer in so that they can sample what they will be purchasing.
