[Community Talk] How to See Top Comments in a Thread

With over 20 comments in most threads, we’re seeing lots of discussion earn the Top Comments spot.

While most blog posts have a highlighted top comment at the top of the discussion area, there’s another way to find additional comments that qualify as Top Comments.

Click the comment count at the top of the thread.

8.0

Here, you will find Top Comments on the post, who posted that comment, and when the comment was posted.

8.1

From this view you will also be able to determine who is involved in the discussion. Everyone who has left a comment can be found in [7] Commenters tab.

8.2

This feature is handy if you have established a good discussion relationship with certain community members. You can use this as a quick view to see if your Community friends are involved in this particular discussion.

Plus, you also get a snapshot view of commenter’s user profile.

8.3

For example, I can see when the user was last active, how many comments they have written, and how many people they are following and how many people are following them.

Do you use this feature? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

This is a nice feature to have. As someone who can be a bit competitive, it will be fun to work toward achieving “top comment” status on a post.

That’s just what I was thinking. I want that top comment spot!

It’s funny, the little things that we can long for. 😉

It may seem funny, but when you see you have the top comment it’s genuinely exciting. There are so many people making comments, but everybody is going to see yours. Who doesn’t enjoy that kind of exposure?

That is true.

I wish more of the crowd content writers would get involved and start participating here because I can tell you that I’ve learned so much already from the participants and information here on the community blog. I’ve enjoyed the discussions so far and it’s certainly nice when one of your comments becomes a “top comment”. Thanks for the further explanation on how the system functions.

You’re absolutely right. I’ve learned a lot too, and it’s great to be able to exchange ideas. Bonus: Even if people disagree with you, they don’t insult you, which is hard to find in many places online.

Yes it’s definitely a valuable thing to be able to ask questions and share opinions without being ridiculed.

I think earlier experiences with this probably turned people away from it. It wouldn’t let me log in at first, even though I tried multiple times (at different times on different days). If I hadn’t read the email regarding whatever they did to fix it, I never would have been back over here trying to log in again.

Thanks for posting this, Laura. It’s good to know there is another way to see what other comments qualify as Top Comments. I don’t think anybody wants to be unaware if they have a Top Comment, and by reading this nobody will have to be.

Thanks for the information. I find that this feature helps me to get to know the rest of the users and to identify those with similar likes/dislikes.

Thank you for this helpful guide, Laura. It’s good to know how to see when a user was last active. Sometimes a member with whom we like to interact goes away for a while, and it’s nice to be able to see that they have re-joined the conversation.

I’m not sure if this is a good feature or not. Now everyone can tell right away who the “slackers” are. 🙂 If your name is towards the bottom, it’s kind of like being picked last for a game of kickball.

I see your point, but on the other hand this could provide motivation for people to work harder and ensure their names are never towards the bottom.

I didn’t know that feature exists, until now. It’s certainly a good place to start when I wish to figure out the direction a conversation is going before I can weigh in.

Being the top comment on a post is a great way to really engage with the post and build relationships with other users who are commenting.

Building relationships with other users is one of the best parts of Crowd Content.

Is it wrong that I love that my picture is in this article? I just thought it was neat that they used our real pictures in the examples.
